A Glimpse Into the Lives of Eclectus Babies

Three week old Red-sided Eclectus

The two chicks now have their down feathers, giving them a fuzzy appearance.  It has been said that a chick with black down rather than gray down will be a female.  This may happen, but it is not a true indicator of the baby's sex.  Another week will bring forth the discovery of the sex.

Pin feathers are coming in.  Both chicks are females and they will have the red coloring with blue.  Note the pin feathers on the wings and tail, and the red blush at the eyes and cheeks.

Boy!!!   Am I hungry.  While you are trying to figure out whether we should use the spoon or the syringe, I am going to help myself.  You can almost see the red coming in on my cheeks.

Eight week old female Red-sided Eclectus is on the right.

Although they are still being hand fed, they enjoy their daily helping of other foods.  It is important to introduce them to fruits, veggies and soft food early in life.  Their beautiful colors are very evident in a short 2-3 weeks.

Casper is a bit camera shy and still wants to cuddle in his corner.

As a ten week old Red-sided Eclectus, Little Red shows off her beautiful colors.  Note her size compared to Pat's hand.

Still at ten weeks, Red has learned to climb to the top of her cage and is pretty proud of herself.  Playing with toys is fun, too.
Red packed her bags and left.

Twelve weeks old Red-sided Eclectus

Red has packed her bags, her cuddly toy and is outta here.
Bye, bye, Red. You have many new adventures ahead of you.
